Lot 0033 Details

Description
FRAKTUR. Hand drawn and painted birth and baptism certificate by the JS Artist, Manheim, Pennsylvania, 1827, after a printed version produced by Johann Ritter, Reading, Pennsylvania. Interestingly, the name on the fraktur is "Johannes Schaeffer", the name of the father and possibly the son who was born in 1807 in Schaeffers Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Good colors with some staining and minor edge damage. One corner is missing. This fraktur, from the Hostetter Collection, is pictured in The Fraktur-Writings or Illuminated Manuscripts of the Pennsylvania Germans by Donald A. Shelley, pl. 265. An example of Ritter's original is pictured in the same book, pl. 254. Late sponge decorated frame. 20 1/2"h. 17 3/4"w. Ex Landis.
