Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Sunflower Decoration, Stamped "H. SMITH & CO.," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1825, cylindrical jar with tapered shoulder and rounded rim, decorated with a brushed cobalt sunflower extending up the front. An incised "M" on the underside may indicate the jar was made by potter, Benedict C. Milburn, who would later take ownership of the Alexandria's Wilkes Street shop. Excellent size and form with classic Alexandria decoration. This rare jar is one of only two examples of this type we have seen, both coincidentally having surfaced within the last year. Restoration to exterior of rim. Sealed 7" Y-shaped hairline on reverse. Shallow chip and minor nick on top of rim, which appear to be in-the-firing. A few very minor base nicks on reverse.
