Early 14C Antiphonal Illuminated Manuscript Vellum

Lot 0344 Details

Description
Early 14th Century Italian Antiphoner Illuminated Manuscript Letter. The historiated initial "S" most likely was cut from an illuminated manuscript choir book. The finely hand painted Antiphonal or Antiphoner is embellished with gold leaf. Written in pencil on the back of the frame is "from a Bolongese Antiphonal ca. 1350". Also affixed to the back is an old Herbert E. Feist Gallery paper label with 1125 Madison Ave. New York , NY gallery address. There is some minor paint loss. The vellum appears to be archively float mounted, but was not inspected out of the frame. Painting on vellum measures 3 7/8 x 3 3/4" and the frame measures 7 ¾" high x 7 5/8" wide. From the Cesare Barbieri estate.
