Elvis Presley's 1975 Martin D-28 Guitar W/(3) LOAs
Item Details
Description
Elvis Presley's Personally Owned 1975 Martin D-28 Guitar and Case W/(3) LOAs and Letter of Recollection From Priscilla Presley - This Martin D-28 guitar was owned by Elvis Presley, and was eventually given to longtime friend and bodyguard Sam Thompson. According to the accompanying notarized letter of affirmation from Sam Thompson, "In January, 1977, while so employed and while visiting Elvis at his Graceland mansion in Memphis, TN, Elvis did present me with his personal guitar, a Martin D-28 model, bearing serial number 361827. This guitar has a blonde wood face and has a plastic residue on the back of the guitar body. Elvis personally told me that the plastic residue was from the hot stage lights melting a portion of the belt on his stage jumpsuit, this occurring during his recent performances in Las Vegas from December 2nd through 12th, 1976." This guitar marks an important time in Elvis' life, as these would be his final Las Vegas performances prior to his unfortunate passing in August, 1977. The letter from Thompson also states, "This Martin D-28 guitar accompanied Elvis either onboard the Lisa Marie jet or in her cargo bay. Elvis played the guitar onboard the Lisa Marie and at various other times in the hotels and on the stages during performances. Although given to me as a gift, Elvis continued to use this guitar as his own during the last months of his life." The guitar also comes with a notarized statement from Vernon Presley on TCB letterhead, confirming Elvis' gifting of this guitar to Sam Thompson. Thompson eventually sold this guitar to the National Enquirer for use as a contest prize and to fund his college education. This guitar will also come with a letter of recollection from Ms. Priscilla Presley, a hard case with Elvis tour stickers, and a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated. The Martin D-28 guitar was used by Elvis throughout his career, first in the 1950s and later during the 1970s. This guitar is so iconic that Martin created a commemorative limited edition "Elvis D28" based on the instrument's historical importance.
