Lot 0220 Details

(AMERICAN 1893-1965)
1938-9, pencil signed and titled in the margin. Carborundum mezzotint.
8 7/8 x 6 7/8 in.
Literature: John Ittmann, Dox Thrash, An African American Master Printmaker Rediscovered", Philadelphia, 2001; figure 34, catalogue number 85, page 20 (another print illustrated)

Condition: Sheet size: 11 3/4 to 11 7/8 x 10 3/16 to 10 1/4 in.
-Edges of sheet are unevenly cut so sheet dimensions not perfectly symmetrical.
- Matted, framed.
- Signature is faded.
- Title reads Chalot" [sic]
- Light staining in areas of sheet not covered by overmat, so approx. 1/4 in. area in margins outside image area is toned. Apparent slight pencil lines at outer right edge of this toning at right.
- Each corner clearly had a tape piece at a canted angle, front of sheet,as there if some discolored tape residue at lower right and upper right corners on front of sheet. reciprocal lower left corner with some visible surface abrasion and color lighter in this corner versus surrounding margins, at lower right corner also some minor loss of sheet, approx. 5/8 x 1/2 in. missing sheet at upper left corner [presumably a loss incurred when tape piece removed?]. With approx. 1/16 in. loss of paper at lower edge of sheet at left. Near this area in lower margin, there is a darkened 'line' - and apparent slight pressure mark.
- In margins, some extraneous small black ink spots and some tiny [generally pin-size] brown spots - presumably foxing - mostly, but not only, in lower margin. In margins, some blackish/grayish areas in the form of fine, spotty clusters - 'smudge-like' in appearance. Also some apparent surface soiling in some margins, including at lower right margin - in this area the margin has a more diffuse surface discoloration - somewhat grayish, apart from the smaller blackish spotty cluster. Similar diffuse surface discoloration in part of top margin.
- With two small tape pieces top edge verso affixed to undermat.
- In top margin, approx upper 1/2 to 5/8 in. of most of sheet lighter in color than surrounding area of margin.
- Verso of sheet : in margins, reciprocal areas covered by overmat on verso have faint toning, with inner margins just outside image [which are toned on front of sheet] lighter in color that surrounding margins. Some tiny brown spots verso of sheet and generally minor grayish/blackish surface discoloration - similar in appearance to aforementioned discoloration in parts of margins on front of sheet.
- Image itself with an approx. 5/8 in. whitish streak at lower left, to left of Charlot's neck in background - apparently not intended - extraneous whitish paint?
