Description
[OPERATION MINCEMEAT]: MONTAGU EWEN (1901-1985) British judge, Naval intelligence officer and author, known for his leading role in Operation Mincemeat (1943), a critical military deception operation which misdirected German forces' attention away from the Allied invasion of Sicily during World War II. T.L.S., Ewen E S Montagu, one page (folding air mail stationery), 4to, London, 28th April 1982, to Mr. Engstrom. Montagu thanks his correspondent for their letter and interesting enclosures, adding that he has spent some time looking for a photograph of himself and remarking 'The trouble is that, when you get to my age (81) you have no recent photos and any that you had when you might (with a bit of flattery) have been said to be just photogenic have long been given away…..I thought of somewhere else where I have some old papers and thought that there just might be some photos among them - there were - but not any of me! I am sorry that I can't help'. Some very light, extremely minor creasing and one small tear to the edge of one fold, otherwise VG Montagu was the author of The Man Who Never Was (1953), an account of Operation Mincemeat, which was made into a movie three years later. A second British film based on the events was released in 2022 under the title Operation Mincemeat.
