Description
Native American, central/midwestern United States, Eastern Woodland, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A set of hand-carved stone artifacts: a hatchet head and a grinding stone. The hatchet head features a fragmentary petaloid blade and a deeply notched groove around the midsection for binding it to the end of a wooden pole. The larger item is a grinding stone of oblong form bearing a wide but shallow grinding surface on one side and a narrow but deep grinding surface on the opposite side. Size (grinding stone): 8.125" L x 7.8" W x 2.4" H (20.6 cm x 19.8 cm x 6.1 cm); (hatchet): 6.1" L x 4.75" W (15.5 cm x 12.1 cm)

Condition
Hatchet head has losses to blade edge and butt end, and grinding stone has losses to some peripheral areas as shown. Both pieces have abrasions and nicks commensurate with age and use. Nice preservation to overall forms.
