Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), Chaco Tradition, Gallup Type, ca. 980 to 1150 CE. A charming pottery vessel resembling the form of a bird with a prominent arched handle, all hand-painted with intricate black-on-white decoration. The vessel sits upon a round yet stable base with a pinched tail at the back that widens to a protruding pair of wings and a long, cylindrical neck opening to the circular rim of the spout. Alternating bands of linear and lozenge designs adorn the exterior of the dish, while a thick handle connects the neck to the back of the animal. Size: 4.7" L x 3" W x 4.6" H (11.9 cm x 7.6 cm x 11.7 cm)
Provenance: ex-John B. Kendrick II collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired 1965 to 1990; John B. Kendrick II was that son of John B. Kendrick, Wyoming governor and US senator
