10th Century. Bronze, just over 1" diameter. Circular, with broad rounded face, flat back, and ridged edge. The surface is textured from burial. Professionally conserved and the pure silver surface restored. On a modern polished leather neck cord with Sterling silver mounts. Worn in numbers on the surface of the jerkin, these small metal brooches provided a measure of protection against sword cuts and, in fact, were a form of armor.
