HUNTER, JOHN. The Natural History of the Human Teeth: Explaining their Structure, Use, Formation, Growth, and Diseases. [8], iv, 128, [8] pages, including half-title * A Practical Treatise on the Diseases of the Teeth. 16 engraved plates by various artists after Jan van Rymsdyk. [6], 128, [32] pages, including half-title. Together, 2 volumes in one. 4to, contemporary sheep, rubbed, rebacked, cover corners restored; minor marginal soiling on opening leaves in first work, small repair in blank corner of first half-title. London: J. Johnson, 1778; 1778

Second edition of the first work, first edition of the second. Hunter's Natural History and the supplementary Practical Treatise " . . . revolutionized the practice of dentistry and provided a basis for later dental research. Hunter devised appliances for the correction of malocclusion. He described the various stages of inflammation of affected teeth, and gave an accurate description of periodontal disease"--Garrison-Morton 3675-3676.
