LUBA Shankadi Sungu female figure statue sculpture Congo African Tribal Art 1585
Item Details
Description
CONGO DRC
LUBA female Shankadi Sungu figure
Statuette with an elaborate hairstyle, typical of the fashion of the Bena Sungu in the 1920s (Neyt, 1993, p33)
We know about twenty works from the Sungu workshops, including a statue in the same style, sculpted by the master of Kiloko (Neyt, 1993, p214), from the collection of the AfricaMuseum in Tervuren #EO.1954.144.1 (another view on Bruno Claessens' blog)
Cascading hairstyle and round buns, triangular nose, "coffee bean" eyes, abdominal and frontal scarifications (only one row here, which is atypical for a Sungu statue), the position of the hands and the shape of the feet are also original and typical
The Luba are a great people in eastern DRC.
Their caryatid seats, their cup holders, chiefs' sticks, arrow holders, adzes and ancestral statues are very famous and among the most valued objects in African Art.
