Akstafa Prayer Rug
Item Details
Description
first half 19th century, 190 x 87 cm, East Caucasus, Shirvan

Although the town of Akstafa (now Ağstafa) is situated on the border between Georgia and Armenia, so-called Akstafa rugs are attributed to the Shirvan area further to the south east. Unlike other prayer rugs from the Shirvan region, Akstafa prayer rugs were woven in a long and narrow format, for which this example serves as a paradigm. Large fan-shaped palmettes arranged in offset rows cover the white field beneath a towering arch placed at the very top end. The inner red secondary border is decorated with four-legged animals throughout, while hooked diamonds adorn the dark blue main border. An example that compares well has been described as a Shirvan by Kaffel. – Obvious signs of age and wear, damaged sides and ends, two tears at the top.
