The Moon.- Wilkins (John) A Discovery of a New World... in the Moon, 2 parts in 1, fifth edition, engraved frontispiece portrait, woodcut illustrations, extensive late 18th century ink notes (dated 1782) at beginning and end of each part, some notes and text at beginning working loose, browned, contemporary calf, rubbed, rebacked in modern morocco, new spine label, [Wing W2187], 8vo, by J. Rawlins for John Gellibrand, 1684.
⁂ The notes cite Thomas Baker, John Wilkins, Robert Hooke, Sir Thomas Bodley; on natural philosophy, the Moon etc.
In this work Wilkins "aimed to expound and defend the new world picture developed by Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler." He "argued that the earth was not uniquely different from other heavenly bodies." - Oxford DNB.
