Description
1st-2nd century BC. A bronze figure modelled in the round as a strutting cockerel with an upright posture, feather detailing to the breast, wings and tail plumage, comb and wattle surviving, detailing to the eyes and beak; mounted on a custom-made display stand. 95 grams total, 80cm including stand (3"). London art market, early 1990s. Property of a Middlesex antiquarian, before 1995. The cockerel was an attribute of the god Mercury, and the bird which announced the beginning of a new day.
