Item Details
Description
Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. A beautiful and intricate textile fragment tightly woven from cotton and wool fibers in beige, chestnut brown, and red hues. The central column features a repeating program of octagons containing a single anthropomorphic figure as well as stylized feline creatures with claws and long tails. The flanking borders consist of interlocking vines or knots and abstract foliate motifs. One corner contains a red cord that borders what may have once been a slit for an arm or neck opening. The textile is mounted in modern times on a canvas backing over a stretched frame with a wire on the verso for suspension. This piece is ready to be displayed!
