Description
This is an Original Amate Bark paper Spell Book by Mexican artist Alfonso Garcia Tellez. The book was written in the late 1970s, and is derived from a centuries-old Mesoamerican tradition of using amate figurines for spells, cures, witchcraft, and other rituals by the indigenous Otomi people, from the villages around San Pablito, Puebla Historia de la Curacion de Antigua de San Pablito Pahuatlan Puebla (History of the Healing of the Ancestors of San Pablito Pahuatlan) is a manual for mystical cures and healing, and includes munecos from Otomi mythology. The perfect mirror imaging in the munecos is the result of a long-established technique of folding pieces of amate in half then cutting them to the desired shapes, but Garcia Tellez's munecos are often much more complex than those of any of his predecessors or contemporaries. Shamans and other religious specialists use the munecos in rituals ranging from rainmaking to sorcery to curing illnesses. The book includes handwritten descriptions, in Spanish, of the munecos and the ceremonies in which they were used. A exceedingly rare and important work, the Met Museum and The British Museum both have copies. The book measures 7 x 5.5 inches and has 27 pages. Collected in situ by Paul Hendricks, Museum Curator. Ex Museum of Oddities, Metamora , Indiana. ( The last photo is a picture of the author, Alfonso Garcia Tellez )
