Shows the various periods of style from Ancient times to the fashion concious 1950s. The authors are true historians and folkloreists, they are both scholarly and interesting to read. They know their subject very well and discuss all aspects from the styles and usage of various periods to the cloth and materials used and the construction of the clothing. Very authoritative and comprehensive giving just about every period,influence,ethnic and otherwise. If its knowledge and history that interests you this is a rare find. Previous owner was a longtime editor at WWD. If its glossy color photos you want this not for you. Pictures are illustrative line drawings.

Condition
1952 first edition. Pages are bright and clean but the binding is paper over hardboards and book was not well made. Exterior hinge lines are opening, paper edges are rubbed. The interior hinges are holding but reader should approach with care because while book is a signigicant history of the subject matter the Publishers did not spend enough to bind the book correctly.
