Pastel Portrait of the Pomeranian Dog
Item Details
Description
Dorothy S. Hallett lived in London and is listed as an animal painter of dogs and cats as well as a miniaturist and illustrator. From her exhibition record, we know she was active between the years 1913 and 1930. Some of her paintings were reproduced in the 1930s in Walter Hutchinson's “Popular Illustrated Dog Encyclopaedia.” She studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris, said to have been frequented by artists such as Modigliani, Miro and Picasso. Hallett exhibited work at a number of galleries, including five times at the Royal Academy, 3 times at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and 61 times at the prestigious Walker's Gallery in London. Her work has sold for over $7,500 at auction.; We can see in this charming pastel painting of Jaffa why the artist was sought after and so well regarded as a canine painter. She was not only able to capture the personality of this prized and pampered pet, but also the likeness. Hallett did many portraits of this type by commission, and yet in each and every one she transforms the likeness of her subjects to a higher level.; The portrait is framed in its original oval, ebonized wooden frame. The frame has wonderful detail to add to the decorative value of the piece. The small edging of beading around the oval provides a welcome break from the plain beige color of the pastel paper. The small edging of beading around the oval provides a welcome break from the plain beige color of the pastel paper. The edges of the frame are wonderfully turned with ribbon-like wraps at four places. This framing suits the portrait perfectly.; The condition of the pastel itself is excellent, with no issues at all. The custom-made frame in excellent condition for its age and type. It is missing a few beads around the edge and shows some wear to the black frame color.; It measures 14-3/4 inches wide and 17-1/2 inches high, including the frame.
