Horse at Stable Door by Mary Browning
Item Details
Description
In this country house painting, it is easy to see why Mary Browning developed not only a following but an exceptional reputation for painting horses.; The horse in this piece, poking his head out of a stable door, immediately takes you into the scene. The stable is of large planks of wood and brick posts. The artist’s colors are all earthy, with an emphasis on browns, grays, drab greens and ochre. Her color palette harmonizes well and shows to its best advantage this charming scene. Her impressionistic style is a bit loose with broad brush strokes. The painting is signed and dated in the right-hand corner: “M. Browning, (19)67.”; Mary Browning lived in Oxfordshire and taught art for many years at a girl’s boarding school in Banbury. During her career she was a member of the Society of Equestrian Artists, with whom she exhibited. She specialized in pastels of dogs and horses, as well as oil paintings on paper. Her style is similar to that of her contemporary, Mabel Gear, another British animal painter and illustrator. It is said that Ms. Browning painted animals belonging to royalty.; The painting is housed in an attractive turned wood frame with an intricate border and a solid band of green dividing the different parts of the wide decorative frame.; The painting is in excellent original condition.; It measures 22 inches wide by 28 inches high, including the frame.
