223: EXCEPTIONAL LARGE OIL PAINTING OF CHILDREN, 19TH C

Lot 0223 Details

Description
HEINZ HEIM (German 1859-1895)
The Cloister Soup
Oil on canvas
Signed lower right "Heim"
38.6 inches x 39.6 inches (98 x 100.6 cm)

The artist Heinz Heim was born in Darmstadt, Germany in December of 1859 and later attended the Munich Academy. While he died at the young age of 36, he nevertheless enjoyed a successful career as a popular genre painter and exhibited widely in his short life including in America, England and Spain.

In the offered lot, Heim closely follows the painting of the same subject by Austrian artist Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller 1793-1865, which now hangs in the Osterreichische Galerie, Belvedere, Vienna, Austria.

In the present painting the children, although certainly poor, are nevertheless joyful, playful and even pious as attested by the youngster at center who offers a prayer of thanksgiving before partaking in his meal. For them the cloister is a veritable haven as well as for their young mothers. Certainly the colorful and animated scene, their shared meal, indeed their shared existence in some ways represents the ideal of Christian community as seen in the early church and as continued as a primary focus of religious orders throughout the centuries as expressed through their charity, especially towards needy children. A large and moving canvas.
