Lot 0002 Details

Description
Alexander Helwig Wyant (American, 1836-1892)

Mountain View with Lake alternatively titled Mountain Lake Adirondacks
Signed "A.H. Wyant" l.l., titled, identified, and dated "Mountain View with Lake/.../ca. 1876" on a label from Hirschl & Adler Galleries, Inc., New York, affixed to the frame backing, descriptive title provided by The Wyant Website.
Oil on canvas, 12 x 20 in. (30.5 x 51.0 cm), in a period frame.
Condition: Lined, minor retouch, very fine craquelure.

Provenance: Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York, to 1995; A.E. Battelle, 1995-2014; through to the current private collection.

N.B. This painting is listed on The Wyant Website as Ref. 117.009.

Condition
Condition: Framed dimensions are 23 1/2 X 31 1/2 X 4 in.
There is an illegible inscription on the stretcher which may have to do with the original purchase, as it seems to read, "Mrs....Paid," but this is really only a guess.

The painting has been professionally conserved with minimum intervention. Retouch appears to be very minor, with only two small dots in the sky above the mountain tops and perhaps some fine lines in that general area. Some natural fluorescence to the dark brown pigment in l.r. corner.

Concerning the lining, it appears that the canvas has been skillfully strip lined, and perhaps with a resin coating added to the old original canvas. The work is restretched on what appears to be the original stretcher. Please note that this is shared as an opinion only, since we don't have a conservator on staff.

Any condition statement is given as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner Inc. shall have no responsibility for any error or omission. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging.
