1630 Mecator Map of Bermuda -- Mappa Aestivarum

Lot 0058 Details

Description
  • Title: 1630 Mecator Map of Bermuda -- Mappa Aestivarum Insularum Alias Bermudas Dictarum ad Ostia Mexicane Aestuary Iacentium…
  • Cartographer: G Mercator
  • Year / Place: 1630, Amsterdam
  • Map Dimension (in.): 7.4 X 10.1 in.

This is an excellent smaller map of Bermuda with an unique very interesting feature. Bermuda is shown twice on the map - once as the central, large feature, and a second time showing the island in relation to the coasts of North America and Hispaniola. Virginia appears to the northwest, Cape Cod is due north, in scale with the 'small' Bermuda representation. The various "tribes" are noted along with numerous settlements. A strapwork title cartouche and compass rose adorns the map and there is a secondary title on top in French. French text on verso. Published by Cloppenburgh. The map is derived from the well known Norwood/Speed map of 1622.
