1581 c. Guicciardini View of Amsterdam -- Amstelredamum

1581 c. Guicciardini View of Amsterdam -- Amstelredamum

Lot 0006 Details

Description
  • Title: 1581 c. Guicciardini View of Amsterdam -- Amstelredamum
  • Cartographer: L Guicciardini
  • Year / Place: 1581 c., Antwerp
  • Map Dimension (in.): 9.2 X 12.4 in.

This is an excellent and rarely seen view of Amsterdam showing the city with its many canals, medieval walls and formal defensive systems. It illustrates the unique Dutch form of urban plan with the Amstel River dammed near its mouth and its flow controlled by channels to the sea with an outer harbor created from the downstream portion, and an inner harbor from the upstream portion. The dam, located at the center, also provided the central plaza for public buildings. Scores of ships and fishing boats fill the harbors, consistent with the increased trade and commerce that Amsterdam was beginning to experience at the time. A gold and blue shield of the city is shown, minus the lions. An index identifies 28 sights and locations in the city. Guicciardini is an Italian living in Antwerp who published the history of arts in the Low Countries accompanied by maps. Likely based on the woodcut plan of Cornelis Antoniszoon (1544) and that of Braun and Hogenberg. There are only 2 references to this map in OCLC, 1 auction sale in past 20 years and 1 listing by a map dealer.
