Important massive Volcanic stone Metate, ca. 1000-1300

Lot 0016 Details

Description
An exceptional Pre-Columbian Stone Metate, the Dominican Republic, Taino Culture, ca. 1000-1500 A.D.; Large and complete square Metates from Taino Culture are extremely rarely seen if ever on the antiques market. This Metate is authentic and comes with a beautiful ancient patina and provenance to a reknown old German collection, read below.; Carved, volcanic-stone ceremonial metates represent one of the most unusual and complex traditions of pre-Columbian artifacts; they are commonly encountered from Costa Rica, but much rarer from Taino. They come in many different forms, and morphological variation corresponds to different regions and time periods. They can be rectangular, circular, flat, or curved. They may or may not have rims and between three and four legs. Some exhibits show signs of use-wear while others show no signs of wear and appear to have been made specifically for use as burial goods.; Our Metate is of the effigy-headed metate style, which feature an animal’s head at one end, with the metate itself making up the body of the creature. In this case it's difficult to make up the uniquely Taino features of this head, but it looks like to be the head of a Turtle!; The metate itself is rectangular with side lists carved and a round symbol in the center. The metate stands on 4 stout legs.; Size: Nearly 35 cm. long and 22,3 cm. wide, thus a massive piece, very impressive. Weight: 6,3 kilograms.; Provenance: From an important German collection of Hermann Hemeick. The collection of 71 stone objects was collected on trips to the Dominican Republic between 1960 and 1984. The exceptional collection was documented and published by the collector and sold 2008. Comes with documentation papers and pictures of the collection from book.; Condition: Superb, possible evidence of wear or at least much weathering and patina but intact.
