Shahsavan Bag Face

Lot 0010 Details

Description
First half 19th century, 54 x 58 cm, North West Persia, Azerbaijan

A Khamseh Shahsavan bag face finely woven in the sumakh technique, formerly part of a khorjin. In the field, two red and one central blue-green horizontal bands of equal width contain mythical creatures and trees aligned in rows. The white-ground border displays abstract syrga birds linked by a pole. The archaic style of drawing and heavily patinated colours are indications of great age. In most bags of this particular type, the central band is narrower and deviates in design. The closure band is still preserved at the top, and remnants of the red kilim back survive at the bottom. Purchased by the collector at Galerie Ostler, Munich. – Slight signs of age and wear, rewoven areas in the upper finish, otherwise in good condition.
