  • Title: A Shijo- and Nanga-style sketchbook
  • Artist: (attr. To) NANGAKU, Watanabe (1767-.1815)
  • Series: Cloth-bound folding album in chitsu wrappers (see picture) containing 27 double-page, shijo- and nanga-style watercolor drawings (only six are shown here).
  • Date: early 19th century
  • Medium:Black ink and watercolor on paper.
  • Size/Format: 10.5" x 15" each
  • Description: The brush drawings are executed in a style typical for that of Watanabe Nangaku (1767 - 1815), initiator of the shijo painting style who, by the end of the 18th and early 19th century seems to have influenced some of the most renowned shijo artists, like Oishi Chinnen, Nanrei or Bunichi. - Former H. Berès collection, Paris. Very RARE.
