Scarce Colton’s double-page map of Texas, c1884

Lot 0006 Details

Description
  • Title: Scarce Colton’s double-page map of Texas, c1884
  • Description: Breathtakingly large, fully hand-colored vintage map of Texas from the very scarce 1890 edition of Colton’s General Atlas. This is the only edition of this atlas that I’ve ever seen—or heard of. (Phillips lists the last date for Colton atlases as 1888). Even though the map is dated 1886, it shows Reeves County (1883) but not Midland County (1885) so it actually show Texas in 1884. Includes excellent detail of railroads, forts, post offices, roads, lakes, springs, watershed, topography, cities and towns. Features the large inset "Plan of the Northern Part or Panhandle of Texas" plus three smaller insets: "Plan of Galveston Bay from the U.S. Coast Survey"; "Plan of Matagorda Bay"; and "Plan of Sabine Lake.” An absolutely beautiful example with no faults and beautiful centering. 17.5 x 28
