Description
  • Title: Scarce SDUK map of New York City, 1840
  • Description: Elusive vintage 1840 Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (S.D.U.K.) city map or plan of New York City. Shows southern Manhattan from the Battery northwards to 42nd Street and portions of adjacent Jersey City, Brooklyn, and Williamsburg. Governors Island and Ellis Island are shown. Proposed large docks shown on the Hudson River, but they were never built. Proposed landfills in Williamsburg ghosted in. Shading illustrates the areas of heaviest development in each of the three cities. 40 important buildings in Manhattan identified numerically and by a key in the upper right quadrant. A few ferry lines depicted crossing both the Hudson and East Rivers. Two fully hand colored engraved views situated at left and right bottom corners. This is a spectacular example of this map; it is more fully hand colored and generally presents better than other specimens we’ve seen. Stains from being taped to a mat in upper corners (won’t show when matted). Very clean. 12 x 15
