Description

Circa 1858 Pre-Civil War LECOMPTON CRISIS Historical publication titled; "PRIVATE and CONFIDENTIAL on GOVERNMENT MATTERS. THE LECOMPTON CRISIS. Grand Mass Meeting at Tammany Hall, Thursday Evening, March 4th, 1858, to Strengthen The President; Called by STEWART BROWN, HENRY GRINNELL, WM. WHITLOCK, JR., AND 3100 OTHERS. SECRET CIRCULAR...". Written during Franklin Pierce's Presidency, It addresses difficulties in Kansas since the Missouri Compromise was repealed. "Every effort to make it a slave state seems doomed to be defeated"...."Our Governors, although carefully selected from their ultra devotion to Southern interests, have all proved traitors". Text encourages the President to remove his armies from Kansas and cease government armed intervention. (Clearly, southern animosities were reaching a peak and signaling the upcoming Civil War.) Online research shows no available copies for sale. There are 14 printed pages and the size is approximately 6" x 9-1/4". Paper covers. Condition: soiling and foxing spots, edge wear, fold lines, creases and edge tears. light damp stain in lower right corner as seen in scan.
