Description

FOLK ART, FRAMED, 1836 REVERSE GLASS PAINT AND TINTED FOIL VALENTINE. SMALL, FRAMED VALENTINE DEPICTING A BASKET OF FLOWERS. CREATED BY PAINTING THE REVERSE OF THE GLASS BLACK AND CREATING A DESIGN BY SCRATCHING OFF THE PAINT TO EXPOSE TINTED, CRINKLED TIN FOIL THROUGH THE UNPAINTED PART. THE RESULT WAS A BASKET OF VARIOUS COLOR FLOWERS AND LEAVES. BENEATH THE BASKET IS THE MESSAGE; “TO MY VALENTINE, 1836”. HOUSED IN A PAINTED PINE FRAME WITH A BRASS HANGING LOOP AT IT’S TOP CENTER. OLD BLACK FABRIC IS GLUED TO THE BACK. APPROXIMATE EXTERIOR FRAME DIMENSIONS ARE 7-1/8” X 5-7/8”. FOUND IN NORTH CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA. CONDITION; GOOD WITH NO CHIPS OR CRACKS IN GLASS. FABRIC ON BACK HAS DETERIORATION. FRAME HAS DINGS, NICKS AND SCUFFS.
