We take exceptional pride in introducing our "30th Edition of Fine Black and White Photographica" on LiveAuctioneers, featuring a dramatic photojournalism essay on Matthew Brady and his photographs of the Civil War that were the rage of America and abroad. Abraham Lincoln had his portrait taken at Brady’s gallery by Brady's manager Alexander Gardner. (This Lincoln image is within this auction). Brady's galleries sold Civil War photos by the thousands. Due to poor eyesight, Brady wore glasses, thus leaving much if not all of the camera work to his assistants. Another of Brady's works presented here is a '2 for 1 Lot' of the USS Monitor. It's fame was as the first all iron U.S. warship, but which was sunken by Confederates less than 2 months after launching. Yet among the most critically important photographs of "Photographica 30" are those of General Ulysses S. Grant who won the Civil war by splitting the Confederacy in two. Grant fought Robert E. Lee For thirteen months, and after Lee fled Petersburg, Grant defeated him at Appomattox. Although many know of Grant for this incredibly historic accomplishment, most adults still fail to realize that after the war he became the 18th President of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Grant was an effective civil rights executive who invented the Justice Department and urged the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment (which prohibits the federal government and each state from denying or abridging a citizen's right to vote on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude).
